  • January 2021: Project co-PI Steven Dundas, with W. Jason Beasley (PhD OSU ’19), published an open access article in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management modeling private shoreline armoring decisions and simulating future scenarios under sea-level rise and policy changes to Oregon’s Planning Goal 18.   • December 14-17, 2020: Graduate student Meredith Leung presented her research at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting. She presented one invited eLightning talk titled “Extreme Total Water Level Forecasts in Alternative Futures Modeling to Assess Coastal Community Adaptation Pathways” and one oral presentation titled “The Varying Drivers and Impacts of Extreme Total Water Levels in the Pacific Basin.”

  • December 9 - 13, 2019: Graduate students Meredith Leung and Dylan Sanderson presented at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco. Meredith Leung received an Outstanding Student Presentation Award for her presentation of “Spatially varying forecasts of extreme total water levels in Oregon: Drivers and impacts”.   • November 2019: Project PI Peter Ruggerio participated in a Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) strategic planning stakeholder meeting in Seattle, WA.

  • November 2019 : Graduate student Katie Stanton and co-PI Jenna Tilt completed a series of focus groups on disaster preparedness with Latinx coastal community members in Newport and Astoria starting in September. Participants discussed community facilities and community emergency preparedness.

  • October 22 - 25, 2019: Graduate student Dylan Sanderson presented his research on the impacts of the earthquake and tsunami hazard on the built environment at the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association's (ASBPA) 2019 National Coastal Conference.

  • October 18, 2019 : Project co-PI Dan Cox attended the state's Coastal Resiliency Workgroup meeting in Seaside, OR.

  • October 17, 2019 : Project co-PI Jenna Tilt and graduate student Katie Stanton presented on the OCF project and their research on equity and acute hazard planning at the Lincoln County Natural Hazard Mitigation Planning meeting.

  • October 10, 2019 : Graduate students Katie Stanton, Dylan Sanderson, Meredith Leung, and Amila Hadziomerspahic led a special panel session titled "Envisioning Coastal Resilience through Alternative Futures Modeling: A Graduate Student Perspective" at the 2019 Northwest Climate Conference in Portland, OR. This presentation introduced the OCF project, explored some of the preliminary project results from the graduate students' research, and guided a conversation about interdisciplinary research, inclusive resilience planning, and the OCF project.   • September, 2019 : Project co-PIs Peter Ruggiero, Dan Cox, and Pat Corcoran were invited to join the state's Coastal Resiliency Workgroup. This group was created in response to public questions and confusion surrounding House Bill (HB) 3309, tsunami inundation lines, and DOGAMI's regulatory role. The group is scheduled to meet October through December, 2019.

  • September 10, 2019 : Project co-PI Dan Cox provided testimony related to the ASCE 7-16 Tsunami Provisions at the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission (OSSPAC) bi-monthly meeting.

  • August 8 - 10, 2019 : Project graduate students Dylan Sanderson, Meredith Leung, and Amila Hadziomerspahic presented their research at the Young Coastal Scientists Engineers Conference - Americas in Corvallis, OR. Dylan Sanderson won the best student presentation award for his presentation - "Deaggregation of multi-hazard damages, losses, risks, and connectivity: An application to the joint seismic/tsunami hazard at Seaside, OR" - and was invited to the ASBPA 2019 National Coastal Conference in October.

  • May 22nd, 2019 : Project co-PI Steven Dundas presented findings from economic research about State Planning Goal 18 to the 4th meeting of the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development’s Goal 18: Pre-1977 Development Focus Group in Newport, OR. The purpose of this group is to review the equity and consistency of the application of a provision of Goal 18 relating to development eligibility to apply for a beachfront protective structure permit. Dundas serves in an advisory role for this group that is convening public meetings monthly from January through July 2019 to guide the future of the policy.

  • May 21 and April 16, 2019 : Project co-PI Dan Cox attended the state's Tsunami Line Working Group meetings in Salem, OR. The purpose of this working group is to recommend updates to statutory requirements found in ORS 455.446 (Construction of certain facilities and structures in tsunami inundation zone prohibited) and ORS 455.447 (Regulation of certain structures vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis). Cox serves in an advisory role for this group.

  • April 30th, 2019 : Project PI Peter Ruggiero testified at the House Committee on Natural Resources.

  • April 25th, 2019 : A focus group with nonprofit organizations serving Lincoln County was conducted at the Lincoln County Nonprofit Resource Roundup held at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Participants discussed how public actions aimed at mitigating earthquake and tsunami risks may impact nonprofits and the people they serve.

  • March 8th, 2019 : The first of of ~six semi-annual meetings with the advisory council was held at the Oregon Sea Grant office in Corvallis. Click here for meeting materials.
